Get to know fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and felowship trained spine surgeon Dr. Raj Gala, and learn what drives his personal approach in caring for patients.
What is your own practice philosophy?
I practice with honesty and compassion. I believe patients want to be informed, and I strive to help them make the best-informed decisions. I try to stay as conservative as possible, tailoring the treatment to each individual. When surgery is needed, I have the latest tools and technology to optimize outcomes.
What made you choose to specialize in Spine surgery?
The field of spine surgery has many complexities, with a lot of areas still being researched. I find it challenging, but also very rewarding. As a spine surgeon, I am continually rewarded when I have been able to improve someone’s quality of life who has been suffering from severe nerve pain.
What trends in your specialty area do you see emerging?
In the field of spine surgery, there is a lot of emphasis now on minimally invasive and robotic surgery. While we embrace those ideas, we must make sure we maintain the fundamental principles of spine surgery.
How do you stay current in your field?
I stay current in my field by participating in several organizations including Cervical Spine Research Society and Lumbar Spine Research Society. My colleagues and I are always sharing new ideas and advancing our knowledge together. I also attend courses to learn new techniques and to continually refine my skills.
Outside of work, what are your personal interests?
I enjoy spending my free time with my wife and two active young boys, ages 1 and 4. We love exploring the Fairfield County’s amazing variety of museums, libraries, farms and parks together.
