I slipped and fell on the ice two years ago and tore my subscapularis tendon. I saw four different surgeons who all said the damage was too massive to repair. Then a friend of mine recommended his surgeon, Dr. Miller. Dr. Miller thought he could do a series smaller repairs and during surgery, was in fact was able to salvage some of the subscapularis tendon as well. He was the only doctor who took the time to fully explain what he saw on my MRI and how he thought he could fix it. I was impressed with his analysis of my injury and what he thought was possible. There was one other doctor from a large New York City hospital who thought he could fix it, but I felt like I would just be a number at that place. I am a 62 yo male. My minimally invasive TKR was done at Greenwich Hospital in Oct 2016. Within 10 days I had full range of motion (0 – 140), and walking w/o a walker in less than 2 weeks. Four weeks post surgery I was walking w/o a cane. Here I am at just under 4 months and my knee feels great, with only a little stiffness from sitting for long periods of time. I went to four different hand and wrist specialists for the severe pain I felt as a result of a serious car accident I’d had in August, 2015, and no one was able to help me. Then the top hand surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian recommended Dr. David Wei at ONS. Dr. Wei spent more time examining my hand and wrist than all four of the other doctors combined. He was the only one who went beyond the X-rays and used MRI to diagnose that I had small fractures at the end of my ulnar bone and crushed tendons. He was incredibly thorough and talked to me like I was a human being instead of an ailment. He gave me such an incredible level of confidence that he could fix my problem and now, nine weeks after surgery, the pain is practically gone. It was the best treatment I’ve ever received from a physician in my entire life. It’s been a wonderful experience. I would gladly recommend him to anyone looking for a referral. (JS)
I was injured in my military career and for 29 years, have managed through neck and spine pain that was caused from it. It became unbearable with numbness in my fingers and inability to sleep, sit or work. I have never had nerve pain like I did and when I saw Dr. Nocek, he sent me for an X-ray then MRI to determine what was happening. While waiting for results, he sent me to physical therapy and to Dr. Heftler, a physiatrist, for an injection to help relieve the symptoms until we could determine what to do. Bottom line, I needed spine surgery. I saw ONS neurosurgeon Dr. Fiore, who got me right into surgery, repaired 3 discs, and cleaned up the problems. Immediately, and that’s no joke, immediately, I could tell I was on the mend. I’ve had chronic pain for 29 years and now, almost three months out, the constant ache and nerve pain isn’t there. I had lost feeling in part of my had and fingers which has since returned. Best part of my ONS experience was that everything is onsite and getting to the bottom of this just took a few short days. Everyone works like a team. They are specialists, unlike my experience at the VA. Meanwhile, they helped me manage the pain. Dr. Vadasdi was wonderful. She performed two surgeries, the first to find out what was wrong with a repair conducted by another surgeon, and a second to then fix the problem. She also thought to collect tissue samples during her first surgery, then finding that I had an infection that required 6 weeks of daily antibiotic infusion. Dr. Cunningham has been my doctor for many years and has done a successful meniscus repair 6-7 years ago. More recently he helped me with a stiff shoulder 3 years ago, (advising excellent stretching exercises that worked) and has been very helpful with my knee and ankle problem. On my latest visit he was very effective in assessing the problem with my knee by recommending and administering a cortisone shot (which had excellent results) and laying out a plan for the next six months so I can return to golf. In July of 2014, Dr. Delos performed ACL surgery on my daughter. Brooke is doing great! In fact, since surgery Brooke has returned to playing volleyball & basketball. She played Varsity Volleyball from Stamford HS where she was a setter. She also played Varsity Basketball where she was the starting point guard. Prior to surgery, my severely arthritic shoulder was painful 24 hours a day. I had a very hard time sleeping or doing anything with my left arm. After the replacement and a reasonable recovery period, the new shoulder was pain free and fully functional, quickly getting to the point where I could do anything I would normally contemplate without giving it a second thought. L.S. of Greenwich is an athletic 51-year-old mother of two, who has enjoyed sailing, skiing, golf and other sports over the course of her life. Two years ago she developed painful tendinitis in her left elbow. Her elbow became so painful that even picking up a glass of water was excruciating. The following June, Dr. Seth Miller gave her a cortisone injection into the joint which brought her initial relief. Unfortunately, the benefit wore off after about eight weeks. When she returned to Dr. Miller, he suggested she try a new treatment option called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). Although not FDA approved, the treatment is increasingly being used by orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists to treat soft tissue problems such as tennis elbow, hamstring strains, MCL strains and patellar tendonitis. At ONS, PRP is administered by physiatrist Dr. Jeffery Heftler, who explained the procedure, “First, 10 milliliters of blood was drawn from Lynn’s arm and then spun in a centrifuge for five minutes. This separates out the platelets from the rest of the blood. Then two to four milliliters of the separated blood is drawn out and injected it back into the injury site.” The theory behind the treatment is the platelets release growth factors which stimulate a healing response. Unlike a steroid injection, it can take up to six weeks to notice the full benefit of the injection. However, PRP seems to be effective in cases where steroids have failed. L.S. was instructed not to use her arm for anything strenuous for two weeks but by the third week, she could tell it was feeling better. She started physical therapy to help get back the strength in her arm and by three months she was entirely pain free. L.S. says, “I am a big fan of PRP. I am now free of pain and back to doing all my normal activities.”
