Physician Spotlight on Dr. Michael B. Held

How did you get interested in orthopedics?

I have always loved working with my hands and fixing things. Orthopedic surgery is unique because, in addition to treating conditions, we can cure them in some cases. Hip and knee replacements are particularly successful surgeries that can lead patients to healthier and happier lifestyles.

What is your practice philosophy?

My primary focus is to develop an individualized treatment plan to help patients return to their desired activity levels and regain a fulfilling quality of life.

Having trained in the boom of robotic knee replacement surgery, I have used and trained with almost every robot on the market. I understand the benefits and limitations of this technology and believe that it will continue to help patients in the long term. Additionally, I have seen a shift in hip replacement towards the direct anterior muscle sparing approach, as some evidence supports an expedited post operative recovery.

How do you stay current in your field?

I attend numerous joint replacement conferences annually. Most notably, I attend the American Association for Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) annual conference, where I have presented and will continue to present my research. I will continue to participate in research activities to find ways to better improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.

What are your personal interests?

I enjoy spending time and traveling with my wife, Sarah. Additionally, I love playing golf, freshwater fishing, and Scuba Diving. Maintaining close relationships with friends and family is an important part of my life outside work.
