ONS Surgical Team makes Trip to HaitiMedical
Dr. Vitale has organized a volunteer medical trip to Hopital Adventiste d’Haiti (HAH) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti with the goals of taking care of Haitian patients with difficult musculoskeletal problems that don’t have access to surgical care. This hospital became a major referral center for orthopedic surgery after the tragic earthquake 3 years ago, led in part by the heroic efforts of Dr. Scott Nelson and others. One year after the earthquake Dr. Vitale traveled to HAH with a large team of orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses and took care of many patients in the clinic and operating room over a two-week volunteer trip which was a great success and an experience which left a lasting impact on Dr. Vitale.
ONS specialists Dr. Vitale and Dr. Miller, as well as ONS physician assistants Georgeann Torina and Erin Anderson are made a return trip with a team of 16 other local doctors, nurses, and volunteers back to HAH from Nov 10 – 16th with the goal of providing high quality subspecialty orthopedic operative and non-operative care to patients as well as educating trainees and health care professionals at the hospital and nearby hospitals. The team has collected many medical supplies for donation, and looks forward to what will no doubt be another challenging and rewarding trip.
