Young Athletes Should Get a Break! A Virtual Youth Sports Injury Prevention Symposium

May 25, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Please join Sports Medicine Specialist and Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Marc Kowalsky, and Adult and Pediatric Sports Medicine Specialist, Dr. Ben Greene, for a discussion on Zoom about the risks to young athletes created by sports specialization and what can be done to prevent injuries in youths.

Early specialization in one sport can lead to overuse injuries and may also contribute to burnout, anxiety, and depression.  An increasing body of evidence indicates that early sports specialization does more harm than good and may even decrease the potential for success in the sport long term.

On the other hand, kids who take a break from their favorite sport and engage in different athletic activities throughout the year develop increased overall athleticism and have a better chance of achieving elite status.

The talk will review the types of injuries that may occur during different sports, how a young person’s physiology is impacted by early specialization, and will provide conditioning and strengthening exercises that may help prevent injuries, and keep kids enjoying the sports they love.
